Why An Acid Diet Could Be Killing You?

Is obesity the number one cause of most of today’s ills? Are meat-eaters more at risk for cancer? Nutrutional imbalances a number one killer? Or is it our genetic pre-disposition.

Perhaps none of the above. Underlying many of the above questions is one unifying theme, increasingly recognized by both traditional medical practitioners and alternative health care-givers. Research seems to anecdotally—and in some cases empirically—support the most popular “cause” theory in health care. Imbalance of body PH was first identified in 1933 by a New York doctor named William Howard Hay, who published a ground-breaking book, A New Health Era in which he maintained that all disease is caused by autotoxication (or "self-poisoning") due to acid accumulation in the body.

Acidosis

Many degenerative or chronic diseases, including cancer, heart disease, and osteoporosis are found to be present where there is excess acidity in the body. Since the body is designed to maintain a constant PH of 7.4 (neutral), by using acid and alkaline minerals from bones, muscles, and body fluids, a heavily acid diet can cause imbalances and stress on the body, leading—according to some experts—to disease.

An imbalance in body PH, almost always too much acid, is commonly cited with being an underlying cause of many of today’s biggest problems in health care:

Bladder and kidney conditions
Cancerous mutations
Cardiovascular damage
Chronic fatigue
Diabetes
Lactic acid buildup, joint pain, aching muscles
Immune deficiency
Osteoporosis or weak and brittle bones
Premature aging
Slow digestion and elimination issues
Tooth decay
Weight gain, obesity
Yeast/fungal overgrowth.

Causes

Excess acid is fairly common today due to a number of major issues:
  • Stress and lack of sleep increases free radicals and acid
  • High protein diets, particularly heavy on meats and dairy, are high in acid
  • The majority of “junk” or “fast” food (deep fried foods, potatoes, meats) are high in acid and over cooking or heavy frying can increase free radicals
  • Lack of balance in diet, for example not enough vegetables or fruit which trend towards alkality, may mean that a stressed over acid body cannot compensate for the dangerous condition by neutralizing with intakes of alkalizing agents (see list of acid and alkalyzing foods in this feature.)
Too much acid—which is easily tested with PH strips inexpensively available at most pharmacies—will likely weaken all body functions, systems and organs according to most nutritionists, and many researchers and doctors An acid “environment” is a “good” environment for disease. A neutral (PH 7) environment is ideal and eliminates free radicals while keeping the body’s systems healthy. Many anecdotal studies, for example, have linked increases in cancer to high acid diets.

Why Alkaline Food is Important
Dr. Theodore A. Baroody, N.D., D.C., Ph.D., in his book Alkalize or Die, wrote: “They (illnesses) come from the same root cause… too much tissue acid waste in the body.”
The goal in nutritional support for health (and especially for people with chronic conditions) is a neutral PH. In a healthy person who eats a balanced diet light on the meats, nuts and dairy, this will naturally occur unless there are underlying conditions that exacerbate acidic environments, such as stress or pre-existing illness. Alkaline PH in the human system is very rare.
When there is too much acid, due to a high intake of meat or stress, the body will use alkalizers in the body to neutralize. A person with a poor diet, however, may not have any available alkaline reserves. If there are no reserves, excess acid will be neutralized by “depleting” the body and leaving the subject in a weakened condition.

PH Strips an Fast Way To Check Your Body
The strips are inexpensive and available at pharmacies. One your before a meal, or two hours after, touch a strip to your saliva and compare to a color chart. You can also test urinary PH, but this tends to fluctuate more. Two or three days a week is plenty to see if your body is consistently normal (7.4).

ACID FORMING FOODS
Meats, fish, poultry, eggs, grains and legumes tend to be acid forming. This is not to say proteins and grains should be eliminated from a diet, however today’s “fast food diets” tends to be heavily acidic, and without balance. The majority of foods ingested should—according to many doctors and nutritionists—be from alkaline foods.

ALKALINE FORMING FOODS
Most fruits, peas, beans, green vegetables, lentils, spices, herbs, seeds, seasonings and nuts (some exceptions) are alkaline forming foods and help provide the minerals the body needs to neutralize acids. If your PH strips indicate consistently acid conditions, in consultation with your doctor, try to increase your alkaline forming foods and lower (not eliminate) your acid forming foods.

Control Cholesterol Level With a Healthy Diet

Cholesterol is a soft, waxy substance found in all of your body's cells. Our body needs it in order to work properly, because body uses cholesterol to hold cells together. Our body also uses it to make hormones, vitamin D, and substances that help you digest foods.

Body needs cholesterol to work properly; high cholesterol, however, can cause health problems. It can cause a state and situation called atherosclerosis, the effects of which comprise coronary heart disease, angina, and stroke. Although the reasons of increased cholesterol are often unknown, risk factors include diet, weight, and heredity. So lifestyle changes alone are not enough to lower cholesterol, medication may be necessary also.

The treatment for high cholesterol is to lower low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL) which is enough to reduce risk of heart disease or a heart attack. Lowering cholesterol can begin with lifestyle change, such as loosing weight and changing our diet.

A healthy diet consists of good nutritional diet that supplements the basic need of the body. It provides the proper amount of energy and raw materials sufficient to keep the body healthy. It also provides anti-oxidants that make people feel proud to be young and look great. Having fair idea of why the body needs healthy food, the next thing is to learn more about healthy eating and methods of eating healthy foods in order to attain stronger body.

Healthy Food for Stronger Body:
Food in its natural state: The power helps build stronger body. Fresh fruits, apples and berries are good to satisfy the sweet tooth. Vegetables of all kinds of green, yellow and orange are rich in vitamins and minerals. Steamed vegetables retain the nutritional value of vegetables. So Keep away from calorie rich sauces and fats. High calorie foods are not good for healthy life.

Fish, chicken and beef: To achieve a stronger body, serve seafood two or three times a week. Ocean fish consists of essential fatty acids that are generally deficient in the diet. Prefer baked chicken and fish instead of fried ones. Lean meat, such as hunting or bison is healthier than beef, which is rich in fat.

Processed bacon, lunchmeat, sausages and hot dogs contain full of garbage, it increase cholesterol which the body does not need. Even if nobody wants the meat, then they can probably go for the healthier versions that are available in health care food.

Avoid non-nutrient food: white bread and pasta are made from flour that is not good for health. The flour contains no nutritional content. Moreover, the high starch content of white bread affect the level of sugar in the blood faster than a regular sugar. Moreover, pastries and sugary snacks, apple pie are non-food items, which are not good for health. It is essential that the dumplings or items must be made from whole grains.

Benefits Variety of Food and Water:
Some people are very sensitive to frequency of food intake. Therefore, these people have the habit to break and eat a variety of foods to achieve a greater mass. Eat a variety of grains. Spelled is a better substitute for wheat. Rather have rice or almond milk instead of Cow's milk. People have to eat variety of foods, even if they do not like it.

Drink plenty of water and limit beverages such as soft drinks. If individuals are tired of drinking water, add some lime or lemon slice to it. Serve kids with some fruit juice with carbonated water. Even green and herbal tea can be good substitute for water. However, avoid excess caffeine.

Avoid Skipping Meals:
Skipping breakfast reduces the energy level by midmorning. It is better to split the breakfast in half than skipping it. This helps a lot eating lunch early, like oats, eggs and whole grain bread. Snacks such as almonds and raisins also very beneficial to health. The breakfast room that offers a better solution to get chocolate or coffee, and keeps the energy level to feel good and fresh.

Why Do YOU Want to Lose Weight?

According to the Office of the Surgeon General,

The primary concern of overweight and obesity is one of health and not appearance.

What do you think of this statement? Does it represent your thoughts on why you want to lose weight? Or, those of the overweight population as a whole?

I think there are a lot of people out there more concerned with what they look like, than the health consequences of being overweight.

This becomes apparent when they finally do try losing weight, they'll opt for some crazy crash diet in an attempt to get slim quick, instead of a healthier regimen they can stick with long-term.

Seems pretty clear (to me at least!) their primary concern isn't health.

I think if we made health our top priority we'd get a bit further on the scale of success when trying to lose weight.

The health ramifications of being overweight or obese make for pretty dire reading. The Office of general sergeon statements, "Overweight and Obesity: Health Consequences," lists some of the consequences:

  • Premature death
  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • Cancer
  • Breathing problems
  • Arthritis
  • Reproductive complications
  • Mobility problems
  • Depression
  • Discrimination
The thing is, most people already know about these health consequences. But, it seems to make very little difference.

Why do you think it's so difficult to change unhealthy habits for good? How do we go about finding the motivation to change these habits, so that we can put our health first?

I'd love to hear from you, share your thoughts below...
